Rawhide and why it’s not the festive treat!

Now many many dog owners across the globe buy rawhide treats for their dogs, especially at Christmas!

What is rawhide?

Rawhide treats come from the inner layer of cow or horse hides. During manufacturing, the hides are cleaned and cut or ground. Then they’re pressed into chewable dog treats of different shapes and sizes.

Now the biggest issue when it comes to these treats is the Manufacturing process, they’re treated with umpteen chemicals in order to make them bacterially clean, also dyed to suit a consumer eye, these treats have no regulations from the likes of DEFRA/FSA or the FDA , as Rawhide is a byproduct of the clothing industry (leather).

Example chemicals used (but not limited to): Sodium Benzoate, FD&C Red 40, Hydrogen Peroxide/Bleaches, Titanium Oxide. Some of these are carcinogenic (contribute to cancer) and others are slow poisons that will cause issues months or years later .

Do these “Treats” still sound lovely?

Now not only are they made in questionable ways but they also play havoc on the digestive system! They’re clearly labelled with a disclaimer “don’t leave your dogs alone with this product, please monitor at all times”. Or something along those lines, this is purely because ,well for several reasons:

1. Choking Hazards

2. Encase of adverse reactions from trace chemicals on them

3. Impactions caused if your dog swallows large pieces that won’t be broken down by the stomach acid, this increases the risk of blockages

Many people will read this and have the view of “I’ve fed these for years with no issues” and this is why these products are still on the shelves, but it only takes one moment to change your view and that’s when your dog dies or becomes seriously unwell as a result, but unfortunately you can’t take legal action as they’re not Manufactured to be a food item!! The onus is on you…

Here’s the knowledge on them and why they shouldn’t be given to dogs on a recreational basis or nutritional. You can also refer to my video on our Facebook page; Raw Galore Ltd - Making rawhide superglue....
