With a heatwave on the horizon we wanted to address how the heat effects your dogs...
We get asked a lot about why a dog is not eating. This is perfectly normal and healthy for them to do this. Just like when you switch to lighter food during hot months since heavier food is harder to process, your dog starts eating smaller amounts of food because dogs are simply less active during-summer, thus they require less food and their appetite is decreased.
It is so important to keep your dog well hydrated, they will need to drink considerably more in the heat. This also helps to prevent heat stroke which can be deadly.
We say this a lot but a dog won’t die from not having a walk but they could from heat stroke. The ground is too hot for their paws; the result of this is the pads can get stuck to the hot ground and rip off. If you do walk your dog please try to do it as early or as late as possible so that the heat isn’t so unbearable.
There are many ways you can help your dog stay cool in hot weather, these tips also help to cool down a dog if they are too hot
Encourage them to stay in shaded areas and away from direct sunlight
Put down damp towels for them to lie on
Fill a hot water bottle with cold water
Put the garden sprinkler on
Keep a paddling pool in the shade for them to splash about in
